The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Everyone is talking about this book lately, and the astonishing thing is that it was published back in 2017. So the buzz is curious but not unexpected, considering this author, Taylor Jenkins Reid, published two other popular books, "Daisy Jones and the Six" and "Malibu Rising" more recently. I can only imagine that when people find an author they like, as I do, they begin combing back over the author's previous works to find more literary gems. "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" is one extremely fascinating read, and will not disappoint fans of the other two books. Almost like historical fiction, the story of the fictional actress Evelyn Hugo takes place in a very specific time in Hollywood when inclusivity, gender, and race were spoken about only in hushed tones, rather than in the open. Spanning the 1950s until the 1980s, this story follows Hugo through her seven husbands, many movies, glamorous dresses and one incredibly close friendship. The narrative is smart, and bold, and far from predictable. It is really unlike any of Reid's other books because it exposes the secret side of Hollywood that so many other authors dare not explore. It is interesting to note, that actress Elizabeth Taylor also had seven husbands, well eight if you include Richard Burton twice. Perhaps Taylor's lengthy marriage track record inspired Reid's work. After reading this book, I think there are probably dozens of other rich tales locked inside the head of Reid, and I cannot wait to see what she writes next. To buy this book on Amazon click here.
