How to Stay Married: The Most Insane Love Story Ever Told" by Harrison Scott Key
In honor of Valentine's Day this week, I am going to write about an insane book. And make no doubt about it this book is crazy, and even has the word "insane" in the title. This book reads like the pages of a soap opera, but the scary part is that it is true, and not fiction. "How to Stay Married" is the story of Key and his wife, Laura and their three daughters. Marriage is hard, and I don't think anyone who has been married more than a hot minute would disagree with that statement. But what about infidelity? Is that a deal breaker? Should it be a deal breaker? And if and when it happens, is it humanly possible to forgive and more forward? This is the landscape of Key's memoir which begins when he finds out his wife is having an affair with a married man "who wears cargo shorts, on purpose." Just that description should let you know that there is humor in this book, as well as pain. There is also a lot of talk of God, as both Key and his wife are devoted church goers. It is perhaps their shared faith that keeps Key from going crazy during this painful period in his marriage. The way his wife continues to go behind his back and see this other man, is baffling to me. Key's power to forgive her again and again is miraculous. But along the way he discovers, as most married people know, it is usually not one person behind the breakdown of a relationship. Key realizes that not only was she not loving him the way he wanted, but he was not giving her the love she so desperately needed either. Love, faith and forgiveness are all dissected in this book, and I found it quite entertaining. To buy this book on Amazon click here.
