“I Know Who You Are” by Alice Feeney
As a general rule, I don’t do creepy. I do romantic. I do dramatic or adventurous. I even do sporty. But I don’t normally like to read books that are creepy in nature. So it is odd that I not only found this book, but enjoyed it, too. I was looking at a list of the best audio books of 2019, and “I Know Who are Are?” by Alice Feeney was on it. I downloaded it from my local library and began what I thought was a thriller. The book definitely smacks of Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl” in a very good way. The main character is a famous actress named Aimee Sinclair whose husband suddenly goes missing. She is concerned for his safety until she goes to the bank and sees that her bank account has been emptied out. She grows even more confused when she learns from the police that she is the prime suspect in her husband’s disappearance. Aimee suffers from mysterious bouts of amnesia which makes her role as the unreliable narrator (another favorite genre of mine) even more tricky. The book then flashes back to a new character, a little girl who goes missing and is then kidnapped by a childless couple of bookies. The little girl’s story and Aimee’s begin to blend together and then things get creepy. And I stayed with the narrative the whole time. It was suspenseful, fascinating and unpredictable up until the very end. When the audio book ended, I was not only pleased I read it, but very satisfied that I stuck with it until the final plot twist. Maybe I do like creepy after all.
