"Save Me The Plums” by Ruth Reichl
I know exactly who first suggested I read the author Ruth Reichl. It was my friend Jay Elliott and she told me to go out and buy Reichl’s memoir “Tender at the Bone.” I have been reading her ever since. And by reading her I don’t mean I read some of her books, or a few of her articles. I read everything she writes, because I love how food helps make sense of the world for her. Her latest memoir “Save Me The Plums” is about her unexpected 10-year stint as the editor of “Gourmet” magazine. Spoiler alert: You know from the first page that the story is going to end tragically because Conde Nast abruptly shut down the magazine in November 2009. However, the closing of the magazine does not take away from the delectable flavor of this book. Reichl is charming, self-effacing, quick-witted and smart. After spending years as a food critic for the “New York Times,” she is thrust into the unlikely role of being a leader and a boss. It seems that management was not a job she would have pursued on her own, so it makes this story even sweeter to see what an excellent editor-and-chief she became. It is sad to realize hat “Gourmet” has been replaced by food blogs, but I’m so happy that Reichl is still writing books about her many adventures inside and outside the test kitchen.
