Summer Job by Lizzy Dent
My first introduction to wine was a twist-top bottle of Soave Bolla my freshman year in college, and I have come a long way since then. I can now taste the difference between a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Fume Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Sancerre. I even once had an excellent glass of Riesling with my friend Page in Alsace Lorraine. This is all background to say I like wine, and I like people who talk and write about wine. “Summer Job” by Lizzy Dent is the story of a young woman named Birdy Finch, who makes one very bad decision: She decides to take a summer job at a hotel in the Scottish Highlands as their restaurant’s sommelier. The problem is the job was not intended for Birdy but rather for her friend Heather, who is an experienced sommelier. Birdy, however, has very little knowledge of wine, yet she is now game for a new adventure. Without Heather’s knowledge, Birdy shows up for her first day on the job impersonating Heather. However, the job of pretending to be a world class wine expert is far more difficult than she originally thought. As in any well-crafted romantic comedy, there is a handsome single brooding man in the shape of James the head chef, as well as a quirky group of supporting restaurant staff to round out the story. “Summer Job” is perfect for an oenofile, fit for a foodie, and a great book to keep your summer vibe going well into fall.
