The Hard Questions: 100 Questions to Ask Before You Say I Do" by Susan Piver
I’m getting married this summer. Let’s write that again in all caps because I’m so excited. I’M GETTING MARRIED NEXT SUMMER! I know. I know. I am most likely suffering already from narcissistic-bride-brain disorder, but I am recommending this cool book anyway. It is a book suitable for those contemplating marriage but also for couples that have been together for many years, too. My friend Michelle Peck got married last year and she recommended “The Hard Questions” to me, and I’m so glad she did. Jeff and I took it on a road trip in August when we went to stay at Johnson’s Beach resort on the Russian River (which I also highly recommend.) While it is a slender book, “The Hard Questions” packs a lot of punch. It is a petite yet well-organized workbook filled with questions on such topics as children, money, sex, religion and work. Jeff and I have been together for six years but I have to say that this book took us into some new territory we had never traveled before. We were pretty clear about things like children (four is plenty) and pets (we want none, not even a goldfish) but the questions about money and religion prompted some new discussions. The great thing about the questions in this book is that it is perfectly acceptable to agree to disagree. For example, pretty soon I want to move into a nice assisted living where they have happy hour from 3-5pm. Jeff wants us to explore independent living a little bit longer – like decades. And that’s ok! The point is that some discussions are difficult to have with your partner and the guideline questions in this book make it easy and fun. Those who know me well know that I’m very romantic, and I don’t like anyone to be alone. I want everyone paired up like little love bugs walking onto Noah’s Ark. So if you are single at the moment, I hope you find a partner soon so you can order this book and have as much fun as we did. What are you doing for Valentine’s Day?
