Forever Boy: A Mother's Memoir of Autism and Finding Joy by Kate Swenson
In honor of Autism Awareness Month, I would like to recommend this book; "Forever Boy: A Mother's Memoir of Autism and Finding Joy" by Kate Swenson. I first heard about her book when my friend Page encouraged me to follow the author on Instagram. Swenson's book and blog @findingcoopersvoice, chronicle what it is like to raise a son with autism. The more I saw of her Instagram, the more I began to love this woman and her family. The book tells the story from the moment her life changed forever when her son was diagnosed with severe, nonverbal autism. As the mother of twins with a disability, I could not help but relate to her roller coaster ride of grief, fear, exhaustion and frustration. The support services in the U.S. are a system that beats you down, rather than lifting you up. Through grace and determination, Swenson and her husband refuse to give up on Cooper, their son. Her story is not only brave and genuine, but also extremely triumphant. They sought second opinions, new therapies and other roads in the face of doctors and teachers who had given up on Cooper. I am in awe of Swenson's strength, and the fact she was able to share her story with others. Her words are letting other parents of children with disabilities know that they are not alone. She's definitely worthy of millions of followers. Please follow Swenson @findingcoopersvoice
