The Swedish Art of Aging Exuberantly: Life Wisdom from Someone Who Will (Probably) Die Before You by Margareta Magnusson
A few years ago, I recommended a booked called "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning" by Margareta Magnusson. Like the fascinating Japanese Marie Kondo and her love of tidying, that book discussed cleaning your box before your death, so your children won't be burdened. This time Magnusson, who is Swedish, has turned her focus on aging, and how to do it gracefully. A widow in her 80s, stuck in the middle of the pandemic, she found herself alone with time to think. She had to find a pleasurable moment in each day and keep herself entertained. She routinely met a childhood friend on Zoom, each with a gin and tonic in her hand. She at chocolate whenever she wanted, just for the pleasure of it, and found happiness in wearing stripes of any kind. And again, she combed through her belongings trying to weed out items that were no longer needed. Further, she started to make a list of things that make growing old easier. One of her greatest discoveries was volunteering and providing service to others. After raising five children, she began volunteering at a local school to read out loud to students. The activity brough her joy and gave her energy. Her strongest recommendation is not to fear death, but to relish life each day. Charming, funny, and quite original, Magnusson's book is delightful.
